The different types of Christmas lights 

Each type of light works a little differently. Fairy lights are easy to wrap along a railing, through a tree or around a doorway, while curtain lights hang as a vertical sheet, making them useful across windows, walls and patio openings. Net lights spread a grid of lights across a hedge or shrub, so you can cover a larger area without weaving a strand through individual branches. Icicle lights hang in uneven drops along a horizontal line, giving you the familiar icicle effect along a gutter or roofline. Rope lights create a continuous line of light that can follow edges, paths and other features.

Working out how much length you need

The amount you'll need depends on what you're decorating and how densely you want it lit. For a roofline or railing, measure the full distance you want to cover rather than estimating it from the ground. Trees can take more length than you might expect because the lights need to wrap around the branches rather than simply covering the height. Check the lead length separately from the lit length, particularly if your power point is some distance from the start of the display. You can compare different lengths in our string lights range.

Choosing between warm white, cool white and multicolour

Colour temperature changes the whole feel of a display. Warm white is a softer, more golden tone that can give Christmas lighting a traditional look. Cool white has a crisper white appearance and can create a brighter-looking display. Multicolour brings several colours into the same display and works well when you want something brighter and more playful. Some sets also let you switch between different lighting effects, so check the individual product if you'd like options beyond a steady light.

Running the display on solar or mains power

Solar lights can make it easier to decorate areas of the garden that aren't close to a power point. Their panel charges during the day, with performance and run time depending on the amount of sunlight it receives. Position the panel somewhere it won't spend most of the day shaded by the house, trees or other garden features. Plug-in Christmas lights need access to a suitable power source, so consider where the cable will run when planning the display. For areas you want to keep illuminated beyond the festive season, our solar powered lights include options for paths, gardens and other outdoor spaces.

Checking the outdoor rating and packing up

Not every Christmas light is designed for outdoor use, so check the individual product before setting it up outside. Follow the supplied instructions for the lights, power supply and connections, particularly where the display will be exposed to the weather. At the end of the season, make sure the lights are clean and completely dry before packing them away. Coil strands loosely rather than bunching them together, and keep them somewhere they won't be crushed or tangled.
