How to choose the right mattress firmness

The right mattress firmness usually comes down to your sleeping position. Plush or soft mattresses are ideal for side sleepers who typically need more cushioning at the shoulders and hips to help keep their spine aligned. Back and stomach sleepers usually need a more stable surface that stops the hips sinking too far, so firm or extra firm is often the better fit. If you move between positions during the night, a medium firm mattress is often the safest choice, especially if you're sharing a bed.

The importance of mattress construction

The materials inside a mattress change how it feels, how well it isolates movement, how warm it sleeps, and how much pressure relief or support it provides. Here's what each construction is designed to do:

  • Pocket spring mattresses wrap each coil separately so every spring responds on its own. Movement on one side of the bed won’t transfer as much to the other side, making them a popular choice for couples.

  • Innerspring mattresses use a connected coil system that creates a firmer, feel at a lower price point.

  • Memory foam contours to your body to help relieve pressure around the shoulders and hips, though it can retain more warmth.

  • Gel memory foam is designed to draw heat away, making it a better choice if you tend to sleep hot.

  • Latex offers similar pressure relief to memory foam with a springier, more responsive feel that many sleepers find cooler.

  • Hybrid mattresses combine foam or latex comfort layers with a pocket spring base, making them a good option if two people have different comfort preferences.

Thickness and how it pairs with your bed base

The mattress profile changes both the feel and the overall height of your bed. Low-profile mattresses are generally between 16cm and 21cm and are often used on bunk beds, trundles and platform bases. Mattresses between 21cm and 25cm are the most common and suit most standard bed frames. Between 25cm and 34cm gives you a taller bed and a more cushioned feel. Over 34cm is the deepest profile we carry, so check that the overall bed height still suits whoever will be getting in and out of it.

Queen mattress sizing

A queen mattress gives you more width than a double, with an extra 15cm. This makes a queen mattress a popular choice for those sharing a bed. A king adds even more width, but doesn’t provide any extra length.

Pairing your mattress with a bed base and protector

The right bed base will support your mattress night after night. It helps stop the mattress from sagging, protects it from dusts and also keeps its warranty intact.

If you need a frame, our bed frames collection covers every Australian size. Once you have your mattress, you can’t go past a protector, helping to keep it clean from spills and stains. A mattress topper is an easy way to fine-tune the feel after purchase if your mattress turns out firmer than you expected.

Mattress FAQ

How do I choose the right mattress firmness?

Start with your sleeping position. Side sleepers generally suit plush or soft mattresses, while back and stomach sleepers usually need a firmer surface. If you sleep in a few different positions or share the bed, a medium firm mattress is often the best choice.

What's the real difference between pocket spring and innerspring?

Pocket spring mattresses wrap each coil separately, so every spring moves independently. That means less movement transfers across the bed, making them a popular choice for couples. Innerspring mattresses use connected coils, giving a firmer, more traditional feel at a lower price point.

Which mattress thickness should I get?

It depends on your bed base and the height you're after. Mattresses between 16cm and 21cm suit bunk beds, trundles and platform bases, while 21cm to 25cm fits most standard bed frames. If you choose a mattress over 25cm, check your fitted sheets are deep enough and that the overall bed height still suits you.

Do I need a mattress protector or topper?

A mattress protector helps keep your mattress in good condition, protecting it from spills and stains. A topper is optional and is best used to add extra softness to a firmer mattress.

What are dispatch times and warranty on mattresses?

Mattresses are dispatched from our Australian warehouse within 1 to 2 business days and come with a 12-month warranty. Delivery is calculated by postcode at checkout. If your mattress arrives damaged, contact our support team with your order number and photos, and we'll help sort it quickly.
